The Lady Mustangs were down by a score of 41 to 39 heading into the final event of the meet, the 4 by 400 meter relay. In order to win the meet the Medford foursome had to win the relay outright to gain the final 5 points that are awarded to the winning relay team.

The Lady Mustangs were up for the challenge. Senior Katie O’Brien (winner of the 600m run) ran a strong first leg, opening up a 10 meter lead over her Lady Falcon opponent. She was followed by senior Lisa Bandoian (winner of the 2 mile run), who maintained the lead, while the third runner, junior Jaime DeRosas (3rd in the 1000 meter), widened the gap a bit more before handing off to sophomore Lauren Walsh (1st in the high jump and 2nd in the 300m dash), who ran away from the Cambridge girl with an emotional crowd chanting her name. The Mustang girls were then mobbed by their teammates after their victory.

The Lady Mustangs had other good performances by junior Ariana Fiorello (1st in the 50 meter dash and 3rd in the High Jump), senior Mady Forcier (2nd in the hurdles), senior Kathleen Harding (2nd in the 600m), junior Amanda Goguen (2nd in 1 mile run), sophomore Christina Lynch (3rd in the Shot Put) and senior Jessica Mederios (2nd in the High Jump).

The Lady Mustangs’ next meet will be a Greater Boston League Jamboree at Somerville High School on December 22nd.

The Lady Mustangs were led by senior captains McKenzie Flynn, who earned 1st place in the 1000 meter run and the 4×400m relay, and Jasmyn Hawkins, who tied for first with her teammate in the high jump with a 4′4″ leap and who also was part of the winning relay team.

Other first place finishers include junior Katie O’Brien (300 meter run and relay), freshman Lauren Walsh (1st place tie high jump and relay), sophomore Ariana Fiorello (50 yard dash), senior Ayna Pierre-Louis (50 yard hurdles), and freshman Nicole Avella (600 meter run).

Several Mustangs also earned second and third place finishes that helped lift Medford over Malden. Sophomores Amanda Goguen and Jesse Alley each earned second place in the one mile and 300 meter runs, respectively. Junior Lauren Bandoian earned crucial points with her 3rd place finish in the high jump and and 600 meter run, while Bandoian’s sister Lindsay took third in a close finish in the 2 mile run. Sophomore Jamie DeRosas was 3rd in the 1000 meter run and freshman Christine Lynch took 3rd in the shot put with a throw of 27′10.” Other Mustangs who did well were junior Lisa Bandoian (one mile run), freshman Micala Mitrano (300 meter run) and juniors Taylor Mason and Lynsie Brogan (both in the 2 mile run).

The Lady Mustangs’ next meet will be the Greater Boston League Championships on Saturday, February 13 at the Reggie Lewis Track Center.

Medford Sophomore track star Ariana Fiorello finished a strong 3rd place in the 55 meter dash at the prestigious Auerbach Freshman-Sophomore Track Meet at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in Boston on Saturday January 2nd. The Invitational Track Meet features athletes from all over the State. Fiorello’s finishing time was 7.62 seconds, just .2 seconds off the winning time by Newton North’s Carla Forbes. Fiorello also placed 7th in the long jump with an impressive jump of 14 feet, 7 inches.

Medford Freshman Shot Putter Christine Lynch placed 21st with a throw of 24 feet, 3 inches. Freshman Lauren Walsh leaped 4 feet 4 inches in the high jump, placing in the top 30 jumpers. Sophomore Amanda Goguen ran a strong mile run with a time of 6 minutes and 39 seconds, finishing in the top 50.

The Medford High School Girls  Winter track team opened the Greater Boston League season with a decisive victory over the Everett Crimson Tide girls by a score of 61 to 25 at Everett High School Thursday evening.

The Lady Mustangs took first place honors in seven of the ten events.  It was a clean sweep in the 55 meter hurdles with Senior Anya Pierre -Louis, junior Deanna Cavallaro and sophomore Madie Forcier running 1,2,3.  The 600 meter run also featured a Mustang sweep, with sophomore Jamie Derosas winning, followed by junior Lauren Bandoian and freshman Nicole Avella 3rd.  In the 55 meter dash it was a 1,2 finish with sophomore Ariana Fiorello winning, followed closely by senior Jasmyn Hawkins.

In the High Jump Hawkins tied for 1st place with senior teammate Aine Collins.  The 1000 meter run was won by senior Mackenzie Flynn while sophomore Amanda Goguen was victorious in the 1-mile run, with junior Taylor Mason finishing 3rd.

Juniors Lindsey and Lisa Bandoian finished 2nd and 3rd in the - mile run, as did freshmen Lauren Walsh and Izzie Kingsbury in the 300 meter run. In the shot put  junior Sam Rodriguez placed 2nd.

The 4 x 400 meter relay team took top honors, with Hawkins, Walsh, Derosas and Flynn leading the way.
